University of Mumbai: Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL)

The Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) at Mumbai University, established in 1971-72, was created to provide access to higher education for students who might otherwise be unable to attend regular classes. Approved by the Distance Education Council, New Delhi, IDOL offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

Historical Background

The introduction of correspondence courses was proposed in 1970 to benefit students unable to attend morning or evening classes. By June 1971, correspondence courses in Arts and Commerce were launched, initially limited to residents within Greater Bombay. Over the years, the program expanded, with significant growth in student enrollment, reaching nearly 70,000 by 2008-2009.

In 1985, the Directorate of Correspondence Courses was upgraded to the Directorate of Distance Education, extending its reach nationwide. This change brought about several improvements and reforms. In 1993, it gained independent status, becoming the Institute of Distance Education. The institute was renamed the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) in 2009, reflecting its commitment to being more open and flexible.

How IDOL Works ?
